What do you think...
About old people in science fiction?
Whatever you want to call them—elders, seniors, the chronologically challenged—people of late middle age and beyond are scarce in science fiction. I say ‘scarce’ because obviously there are some (before you tell me all the examples), but generally there aren’t so many compared to younger characters.
I mentioned this in a post on the shipmates’ Facebook page, and it garnered more interest than I’d anticipated. So I thought I would mention the phenomenon here too. Why do you think this is so, and do you think there should be more sci-fi characters in the later years of their lives?
Post in the comments or on the Facebook page.
I’ve resolved to include older characters in Interstellar Fleet, my new series coming out later this year. A spinoff from Star Legend, the series starts with Talman Prime. If you’ve read Star Legend you will get the reference.
Interstellar Fleet will be available to the public in Kindle Unlimited on Amazon, but shipmates have a couple of additional options open to them. By signing up for the paid Substack, you can read my new books as I write them and receive early release copies.
Tier 2 patrons on Patreon receive early release copies too, and other goodies are available. I sent out links to the final Space Colony One book, Reprisal, last week, and there’s still time to get yours by signing up.
Talking of which, welcome to new patron Michael Claremont and new paid subscriber Barney D!
And, on the subject of Kindle Unlimited, Star Mage Saga will leave the program by the end of September and begin appearing in other bookstores during October.
MORE NEWS
Advance copies of Reprisal have gone out to the Review Crew. If you’re in the crew, check your emails. If you would like to join, send a link to a review you’ve already written on one of my books to jenny@jjgreenauthor.com
Take care and enjoy your books!

we need to show what is happening in real life people;e are loving longer than ever and if that is true in the here and now that in the way future I think it would be even more so like maybe people of 200 or maybe 300 plus years of age and still fully functional
Define old people. In my opinion “old” is a state of mind. Age is merely a number that tells you how long it is since you were born. So although I will be 76 in a couple of weeks, I don’t consider myself to be old. Perhaps SF needs to decide what constitutes on “old” person. After some of the SF novels I have read in the past have people going through a surgical process that returns them to a younger age but they are still many decades of age!!
