Phew!

That isn’t a phew of relief, it’s a phew of blimey, isn’t it hot again?

As the UK heads into another heatwave—I’ve actually lost count of how many we’ve had this year—it’s with trepidation I anticipate something that’s going to mean an encounter with even hotter temperatures.

I can’t tell you what yet. That’s a subject for a later bulletin.

But I console myself that there’s a bright side to everything if you look hard enough.

Take, for example, this sunflower.

I love sunflowers.

I’ve tried to grow them, off and on, for years, without success.

After this year’s failure, I’d concluded that I must have done a terrible harm to sunflowers in a previous life or that they simply didn’t like me.

However, it turned out that I have a very particular personal method for growing sunflowers. First, I fill a feeder with wild bird seed. Then, I do absolutely nothing else except to witness the single flower of a volunteer plant that sprouted from a fallen seed in a crack between paving slabs.

Who knew it could be so easy?
